🌟 Welcome to Dance Class! Setting Your Child Up for Success from Day One

Congratulations! 🎉 By choosing dance for your child, you’re giving them so much more than a fun activity — you’re opening the door to growth in countless ways. Dance builds motor skills, teamwork, fitness, social skills, brain development, musicality, problem-solving, memorization, and coordination — just to name a few!

Whether your little one is stepping into the studio for the very first time or returning for a new season, we want their first experience to be joyful, positive, and memorable. Here are some of our favorite tips to help both you and your dancer start off on the right foot:

1. Set the Stage with Expectations 🌱

Before class even begins, take a moment to talk with your child about what they can expect. Let them know there will be time to learn and time to play. Explain that when the teacher is speaking, it’s important to listen closely — that’s when they’ll hear all the secrets of dance! 🩰

It’s also helpful to remind them that practice makes dancing even more fun. The more they practice, the more confident they’ll feel. These small conversations go a long way in setting your dancer up for success — and their teacher will thank you too!

2. Find the Perfect Dance Shoes 👟

The right shoes make a huge difference — not only for comfort but also for learning proper technique and preventing injuries. Here’s what to look for:

  • Ballet slippers / jazz shoes: Should fit like a glove — snug with no extra material near the toes. This helps your child feel the floor and build balance and alignment.

  • Tap shoes: Should be fitted but not too tight. A snug fit gives them more control over their sounds. Choose a sturdy shoe with a flat heel under 1 inch.

  • Hip hop sneakers: Look for a flat sole with medium-to-low grip. Avoid heavy treads (which make turns difficult) and slip-ons (which can lead to injuries). Laced shoes are best for beginners.

🩰 Pro tip: Always have your child try on their dance shoes before class — street shoe sizes aren’t always accurate for dance shoes!

3. Dress for Success 👗

Wearing the right dancewear isn’t just about looking the part — it’s about helping your child learn. Snug, form-fitting clothing allows teachers to see their alignment and correct their technique. Loose T-shirts and baggy pants can hide important details.

You’ll find our dress code for each class on our website HERE. And when in doubt, opt for something fitted and stretchy so your dancer can move freely and comfortably.

4. Let Them Show Off! 🎉

After class, encourage your dancer to show you what they learned. This isn’t just adorable — it’s also educational! Demonstrating reinforces new skills and builds confidence. Plus, it’s a wonderful way for you to celebrate their progress together.

5. Cheer Them On — Don’t Critique 📣

As tempting as it may be to correct that turned-out foot or pointed toe, leave the teaching to us. Dance is a vulnerable art form, and what your dancer needs most from you is support and encouragement.

If you’re ever unsure whether they’re practicing something correctly, feel free to reach out to the studio. We’re always happy to provide guidance or extra tips so your dancer can keep learning at home.

6. Make the First Day Smooth ⏰

Arriving about 15 minutes early can make a world of difference. It gives your child time to explore the space, use the restroom (super important!), find their classroom, and even meet a new friend or two before class starts.

7. Trust the Process 💫

It’s natural to want to step in and help, but the best thing you can do is let the bond grow between your dancer and their teacher. Watch from the observation window and cheer them on from there. If we ever need you during class, we’ll come get you.

💖 Ready, Set, Dance!

With these simple tips, you’re setting your dancer up for a successful, joyful start to their dance journey. Dance is more than just steps and music — it’s about confidence, creativity, and connection. And we’re so excited to share that journey with your family.

Here’s to a wonderful first class — and many magical dance moments to come! ✨
